There is a lot of hard work involved in learning to play the piano, but the rewards are many: self-confidence, self-esteem, intellectual growth and maturity, perseverance toward a long-term goal, joy, pride, poise, coordination, and satisfaction with a job well done.  But, most importantly, playing music is fun and is a skill that can last a lifetime.  It takes commitment though, from the parents as well as the student and teacher.  I sincerely hope that the combination of my teaching and your encouragement and discipline at home will make studying music a wonderful experience for your child.

It is difficult to sum up a teaching style of philosophy in a few short sentences, but there are several factors I believe are critical to a student's success:

  • Students playing "pieces" immediately so they have fun and are successful from the beginning
  • Development of superior reading skills
  • Use of articulation for more interesting musical expression
  • Use of exercises to enhance musicality, but not as a goal in themselves
  • Understanding the 'pulse' of music and the importance of rhythm
  • Ownership of the keyboard, acquired through a gradual learning process of the theory involved in the music

Through the 1 on 1 student-teacher lessons, I strive to match the student's learning approach to presentation of the material.  As the student progresses, I slowly incorporate exercises and theory into the student's playing.  I have a deep passion for music, and a strong desire to help students discover an appreciation for the piano and a love for music.
